Overview

Heliotropium indicum extract is a **botanical extract** derived from the whole plant Heliotropium indicum, used traditionally for a range of medicinal purposes. The extract contains a variety of phytochemicals, including pyrrolizidine alkaloids, phenolics, saponins, terpenoids, cardiac glycosides, fatty acids, and flavonoids. Its activities are attributed to these constituents. Preclinical studies have documented **anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, gastroprotective, and wound healing properties**, among others. Mechanistically, the extract exhibits anti-inflammatory action via inhibition of enzymes and signaling molecules such as COX-2, production of inflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6), and nitric oxide production. It has shown potential in in vitro and in vivo animal models for inhibiting inflammation, microbial growth, oxidative stress, and certain cancer cell lines. The mechanism of action is primarily **multi-targeted**, attributed to the complex mix of natural products in the extract, with some compounds shown to dock with and inhibit COX-2, as well as downregulating inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress markers[1][2][3][5]. Clinical trials and pharmaceutical formulations are limited, with most evidence coming from preclinical and traditional medicine reports[3].
