Heliox21 is a medical gas mixture composed of 79% helium and 21% oxygen. It is utilized in respiratory therapy to reduce the work of breathing (WOB) in patients with airway obstruction or those requiring ventilatory support, such as post-extubation patients in the intensive care unit. The therapeutic rationale for Heliox21 is based on the physical properties of helium; being significantly less dense than nitrogen (the primary component of atmospheric air), the mixture reduces the Reynolds number of the gas flow, thereby promoting laminar flow and decreasing airway resistance. This facilitates more efficient gas delivery to the distal alveoli and reduces the pressure required to move gas through narrowed airways. In clinical practice, it is often administered via non-invasive ventilation (NIV) to prevent respiratory failure and ease the transition from mechanical ventilation.
