Overview

Helium is an inert noble gas being investigated for its potential cardioprotective effects during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with coronary artery disease. Research conducted by the Academic Medical Center at the University of Amsterdam has explored whether inhaled helium can influence coronary vessel diameter and reduce microvascular resistance. The proposed mechanism of action is not receptor-mediated but is thought to involve physical gas properties and the induction of conditioning effects similar to ischemic preconditioning, which may protect the myocardium from ischemia-reperfusion injury.
