Helium + oxygen (specifically in a 65%/35% ratio) is a medicinal gas mixture developed by Air Liquide for the treatment of severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The therapy utilizes the physical properties of helium, which is significantly less dense than nitrogen (the primary component of room air). By replacing nitrogen with helium, the mixture reduces gas flow turbulence and airway resistance, thereby decreasing the work of breathing and improving alveolar ventilation.
