Overview

Helix lucorum hemocyanin is a **large, copper-containing oxygen-transport glycoprotein** derived from the hemolymph of the garden snail Helix lucorum. It acts primarily as an extracellular respiratory protein in gastropods, but demonstrates significant immunomodulatory and antitumor activities in preclinical studies. Its **mechanisms of action** include direct antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic effects on tumor cells (notably hematological cancers and certain carcinomas), as well as strong stimulation of the mammalian immune response, potentially via its xenogeneic glycan structures. Hemocyanin and its subunits from H. lucorum have shown efficacy in reducing tumor viability, suppressing tumor growth and metastasis, and prolonging survival in animal models, with observed upregulation of genes involved in apoptosis and immune activation. Structural subunits (α and βc) may display increased antitumor potency compared to the intact oligomeric complex. It is being studied as a **potential immunotherapeutic or biologic anticancer agent**, as well as for its antioxidant properties[1][2][3][5].
