Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Helocaine is an over-the-counter (OTC) topical ointment developed by Pagari Life Science for the treatment of cold sores (herpes simplex virus 1), fever blisters, and minor skin irritations such as cuts, burns, and insect bites. The formulation combines tetracaine (2%), a potent ester-type local anesthetic, with mineral oil (74.4%), which serves as a skin protectant. Tetracaine provides rapid and long-lasting pain relief by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels on sensory neurons, thereby inhibiting the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses. Mineral oil forms an occlusive physical barrier on the skin, preventing moisture loss and protecting the affected area from environmental irritants to facilitate healing. In addition to the marketed OTC product, Pagari Life Science is developing an advanced formulation of Helocaine for the treatment of major wounds and burns, which is currently in preclinical development.
