Overview

Hemaseel is a human plasma-derived fibrin sealant originally developed by Haemacure Corporation and later acquired by Angiotech Pharmaceuticals. It is a biological product composed of two primary active components: human fibrinogen and human thrombin. When applied topically, these components interact to mimic the final stage of the natural blood coagulation cascade, resulting in the formation of a stable, cross-linked fibrin clot. This clot provides hemostatic, adhesive, and sealing properties. Hemaseel APR is FDA-approved as an adjunct to hemostasis in cardiac surgery and for the treatment of splenic trauma when conventional surgical techniques are insufficient. The product has also been investigated for broader applications, including the prevention of post-surgical adhesions, skin graft fixation in burn patients, and accelerated wound healing.
