Hematopoietic progenitor cells, cord blood is an allogeneic cell therapy product derived from the blood remaining in the placenta and umbilical cord after childbirth. This product contains multipotent hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells capable of reconstituting bone marrow and restoring hematopoiesis following myeloablative treatment or in cases of inherited or acquired disorders affecting the hematopoietic system. Cord blood-derived stem/progenitor cells are considered more immunologically "naïve" than those from adult sources and can be used for transplantation even with partial HLA mismatch. The mechanism of action involves engraftment of donor-derived multipotent stem/progenitor cells that differentiate into all major types of mature blood and immune system lineages[1][2][4][6]. Primary indications include treatment of various cancers (such as leukemia), immune deficiencies, genetic disorders (e.g., Fanconi anemia), and other conditions requiring restoration or replacement of bone marrow function[6][9].
