Fudacyn (hematoporphyrin derivative) is a photosensitizing agent developed and manufactured by Fujian Longhua Pharmaceutical for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT). It is a complex mixture of porphyrins derived from the chemical modification of hemoglobin. Fudacyn is administered intravenously and selectively accumulates in malignant tissues over a period of 48 to 72 hours. When activated by light of a specific wavelength (typically 630 nm laser light), the drug generates reactive oxygen species, primarily singlet oxygen, which induces localized oxidative damage to tumor cells and their microvasculature. This process leads to tumor necrosis and apoptosis. In China, Fudacyn is utilized for the treatment of various solid tumors, including esophageal, gastric, and bladder cancers, and has been specifically evaluated for its ability to alleviate obstruction and dysphagia in patients with advanced esophageal cancer.
