Hematrix (also known as Hematrix Active Patch) is a topical hemostatic medical device developed by BIOVIIIx, following its acquisition of Hematris GMBH. The device consists of a polyurethane foam sponge impregnated with active procoagulant and antifibrinolytic agents, including thrombin, calcium chloride, and epsilon-aminocaproic acid. It is designed to achieve rapid hemostasis in cases of severe arterial and venous bleeding, typically within five minutes of application and manual compression. The mechanism involves the physical absorption of blood by the polyurethane matrix and the biochemical acceleration of the coagulation cascade; thrombin and calcium chloride facilitate the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, while epsilon-aminocaproic acid acts as an antifibrinolytic to stabilize the resulting clot. Hematrix is indicated for use in surgical and post-interventional settings, particularly for patients with bleeding disorders such as haemophilia.
