Heme-albumin is an investigational **heme-bound human serum albumin protein complex** being developed as an intravitreal treatment approach for early retinal degeneration, particularly dry age-related macular degeneration. The complex is intended to transiently induce heme oxygenase-1, enabling heme catabolism to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory products including carbon monoxide and biliverdin. In retinal pigment epithelial-cell models, heme-albumin and its polydopamine nanoparticle delivery formulation reduced oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling; murine intravitreal studies have evaluated tolerability and biocompatible dosing.
