Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hemerocallis citrina, commonly known as the daylily, is a perennial herb native to East Asia that is widely utilized as both a functional food and a traditional medicinal plant. Pharmacological investigations have identified several bioactive fractions, including total flavonoids (HCFs), total phenols (HLTP), and specific coumaroylquinic acids (3-O-p-coumaroylquinic acid and 4-O-p-coumaroylquinic acid), which exhibit potent antidepressant properties. These effects are mediated through the modulation of the microbiota-gut-brain axis, inhibition of neuroinflammation (reducing IL-6 and TNF-α), and activation of the PKA/CREB/BDNF signaling pathway to enhance neurotrophic support and monoamine neurotransmitter levels (serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine). Additionally, the plant contains polysaccharides with antioxidant and anti-aging potential, and its aqueous extracts serve as a natural laxative by promoting small intestinal motility and increasing fecal moisture. Recent research also explores its utility in neuroprotection against amyloid-beta toxicity and as a stabilizing agent for green-synthesized nanoparticles in wound healing applications.
