Overview

HEMO2Life is an innovative oxygen carrier developed by the French biotechnology company Hemarina, derived from the extracellular hemoglobin (M101) of the marine lugworm *Arenicola marina*. This giant hexagonal bilayer hemoglobin molecule has a molecular weight of approximately 3,600 kDa and is capable of binding 156 oxygen molecules, which is 40 times the capacity of human hemoglobin. Unlike mammalian hemoglobin, M101 operates independently of any co-factors such as 2,3-DPG and is naturally extracellular, preventing the nephrotoxicity often associated with cell-free human hemoglobin. HEMO2Life is used as an additive in organ preservation solutions during transplantation to provide physiological oxygenation to the graft. By maintaining aerobic metabolism during the cold ischemia phase, it significantly reduces ischemia-reperfusion injury, improves graft survival, and reduces the incidence of delayed graft function in kidney, liver, and lung transplants.
