Overview

Hemocoagulase is an enzyme-based hemostatic agent derived from snake venom (notably Bothrops species). It is used to control and prevent bleeding in a variety of clinical settings including surgical procedures (cardiac surgery, dental operations), traumatic injuries, gynecological and gastrointestinal hemorrhages. Hemocoagulase acts by accelerating the blood coagulation process through thrombin- and thromboplastin-like activity. Specifically, it catalyzes the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin by cleaving the α-subunit of fibrinogen and promoting polymerization into insoluble fibrin fibers via factor XIII activation. This results in rapid clot formation that helps arrest bleeding and promote wound healing. The drug can be administered intravenously or topically depending on clinical need[1][2][3][4][5][6].
