Overview

Hemocoagulase Bothrops atrox is a hemostatic agent derived from the venom of the *Bothrops atrox* snake (Common Lancehead). It is a purified enzyme complex primarily composed of a thrombin-like enzyme (batroxobin) and a thromboplastin-like enzyme. The thrombin-like component promotes blood coagulation by cleaving fibrinogen to release fibrinopeptide A, leading to the formation of fibrin monomers. The thromboplastin-like component accelerates the conversion of prothrombin into thrombin at the site of vascular injury. Unlike endogenous thrombin, hemocoagulase does not activate Factor XIII, resulting in a fibrin clot that is eventually resolved by natural fibrinolysis. Developed and marketed by Grand Life Sciences (Beijing North King Biological Pharmaceutical), it is approved in China for the prevention and treatment of hemorrhage in various surgical settings, including general surgery, orthopedics, and obstetrics.
