Hemoglobin glutamer-250 is a purified, glutaraldehyde-polymerized, bovine-derived hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier developed as a blood substitute and volume expander. Its primary mechanism is to increase the oxygen-carrying capacity of circulating blood in patients with acute anemia or significant blood loss, especially when allogeneic red blood cell transfusion is not possible or available. The drug acts by delivering oxygen to tissues via free polymerized hemoglobin molecules in plasma rather than within red cells. It has been marketed under the brand name Hemopure for use in South Africa for adult patients with acute anemia and has been investigated for other indications such as ischemia and shock. The product was originally developed by Biopure Corporation and later by HbO2 Therapeutics[1][3][5].
