Hemoglobin raffimer is a purified, cross-linked human hemoglobin solution developed as a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (HBOC) and blood substitute. It is designed to deliver oxygen to tissues and organs in situations where red blood cell transfusion is not possible or desirable, such as for patients who refuse allogeneic blood products due to religious beliefs or when compatible blood is unavailable. The drug acts by directly increasing plasma hemoglobin concentration, thereby improving oxygen delivery during acute anemia or major surgery. Its mechanism of action involves mimicking the oxygen-carrying function of native red cell-bound hemoglobin but in an acellular form. Clinical studies have evaluated its use primarily in settings like coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery and life-threatening anemia. Hemoglobin raffimer has been shown to reduce the need for allogeneic red blood cell transfusions but may be associated with increased risk of hypertension due to nitric oxide scavenging by free plasma hemoglobin[2][5][8]. The product was developed under the brand name Hemolink.
