Overview

Hemoporfin is a small molecule porphyrin derivative used as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy (PDT), primarily for the treatment of port-wine stains (naevus flammeus). Upon intravenous administration, hemoporfin accumulates in vascular lesions and, when activated by specific wavelengths of light (typically 532 nm), generates reactive oxygen species that selectively damage abnormal blood vessels. This mechanism underlies its efficacy in treating vascular malformations such as port-wine stains. Hemoporfin-mediated PDT has demonstrated safety and effectiveness in both adolescent and adult patients with these conditions. The drug was innovatively developed by Shanghai Fudan-Zhangjiang Bio-Pharmaceutical for this indication[1][3][4][5][6].
