Overview
The Hemopurifier is an investigational extracorporeal medical device developed by Aethlon Medical. It is designed to remove enveloped viruses and tumor-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs), including exosomes, from the bloodstream. The device operates via a combination of plasma separation, size exclusion, and affinity binding using a proprietary resin containing the plant lectin Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA) bound to diatomaceous earth. This mechanism targets mannose residues present on the surface of enveloped viruses and EVs. The primary indications under investigation are advanced or metastatic cancers—especially in patients unresponsive or intolerant to standard therapies—and life-threatening viral infections for which no approved treatments exist. The FDA has granted the device Breakthrough Device designation for these uses[1][2][4][6][8].
