Overview

Hemostase MPH is a plant-based topical hemostatic agent developed and distributed by CryoLife (now Artivion). It utilizes Microporous Polysaccharide Hemospheres (MPH) technology, which consists of particles derived from plant starch engineered to act as a molecular sieve. When applied to an active bleeding site, the spheres rapidly dehydrate the blood by absorbing the liquid component, which concentrates endogenous platelets, thrombin, and fibrinogen to accelerate the natural clotting cascade. It is indicated for use in surgical procedures, including cardiac, vascular, and general surgery, to control capillary, venous, and arteriolar bleeding when conventional methods are ineffective or impractical. The product is fully biocompatible, typically resorbing within 24 to 48 hours, and has been shown in preclinical studies not to promote infection.
