Hepalatide is a synthetic peptide drug under development primarily for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis D. It acts as an entry inhibitor by targeting the sodium taurocholate co-transporting polypeptide (NTCP), which serves as a receptor for hepatitis B and D viruses on hepatocytes. By binding to NTCP, hepalatide blocks viral entry into liver cells, thereby interrupting the cycle of infection and reinfection that characterizes chronic hepatitis B therapy[1][2][3]. Preclinical studies have also shown that hepalatide can ameliorate metabolic dysfunctions such as insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis in models of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)[4]. Additionally, it has been investigated for its potential in type 2 diabetes due to its effects on glucose and lipid metabolism[1][7]. Hepalatide is administered subcutaneously.
