Overview
**HepaMate** is an investigational extracorporeal bioartificial liver support device for severe acute liver failure, including fulminant and subfulminant hepatic failure. It separates plasma from the patient's blood and circulates it through a hollow-fiber bioreactor containing cryopreserved porcine hepatocytes, together with charcoal-based detoxification and oxygenation components, to temporarily provide hepatic detoxification and metabolic support as a bridge to liver recovery or transplantation. The technology was previously known as HepatAssist and underwent Phase I and pivotal Phase II/III clinical evaluation before a further pivotal Phase III study was proposed.
