HepaMate is a cell-based bioartificial liver (BAL) system designed as an extracorporeal temporary support device for patients with acute or severe liver failure, including fulminant and subfulminant hepatic failure. Developed by HepaLife Technologies (later acquired by Alliqua), the system utilizes a hollow-fiber bioreactor containing proprietary cryopreserved porcine hepatocytes. It functions by combining blood detoxification with liver cell therapy, mimicking whole liver function by processing patient plasma through the bioreactor where the porcine cells perform metabolic and synthetic tasks. The system includes a plasma separation cartridge, a charcoal column, an oxygenator, and a plasma reservoir. It has been evaluated in Phase I and Phase II/III clinical trials and has received orphan drug and fast-track designations from the FDA.
