Heparin + allogeneic islets is an experimental cell-based combination therapy in which donor-derived pancreatic islets are modified or co-administered with the anticoagulant heparin to improve the safety and engraftment of allogeneic islet transplantation for type 1 diabetes. In this approach, heparin can be conjugated to the islet surface or otherwise co-delivered to reduce the instant blood‑mediated inflammatory reaction (IBMIR), intraportal thrombosis, and early islet loss that occur when transplanted islets contact recipient blood, while preserving insulin secretion and the ability of the graft to restore normoglycemia in diabetic models.[1][11][9]
