Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Heparin polyaldehyde (also referred to as heparin-polyaldehyde or oxidized heparin) is a modified form of heparin prepared by the periodate oxidation of heparin. This chemical modification introduces reactive aldehyde groups onto the heparin backbone while preserving its core anticoagulant properties. It has been investigated primarily as a bioactive component in multilayer nanocoatings (often layered with cationic polymers like glycol chitosan) designed to encapsulate pancreatic islets. This protective nanocoating aims to prevent the instant blood-mediated inflammatory response (IBMIR) and improve graft survival following islet transplantation in patients with type 1 diabetes.
