Overview

Heparina cálcica is an anticoagulant medication that is the calcium salt of heparin. It's primarily used for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disorders. ## Mechanism of Action Heparina cálcica works by inhibiting blood coagulation through potentiating the inhibitory effect of antithrombin III on factors IIa and Xa in the coagulation cascade[1][4]. This mechanism prevents the formation of blood clots and helps in treating and preventing thromboembolic events. ## Indications The primary indications for heparina cálcica include: - Preventive and curative treatment of thromboembolic accidents[1][2][6] - Treatment and prevention of arterial, venous, or pulmonary thromboembolism[3] - Prevention of venous thrombosis, especially in orthopedic settings[6] - Treatment of deep vein thrombosis[6] - Pulmonary embolism[6] - Acute coronary syndrome[6] - Prevention of clot formation in extracorporeal circuits[6] ## Administration Heparina cálcica can be administered through: - Subcutaneous injection (most common route)[8] - Intravenous administration (for certain indications)[8] ## Contraindications The medication is contraindicated in: - Hypersensitivity to heparin[1][5] - Hemorrhagic tendencies and vascular fragility[1] - Severe hypertension[1] - Duodenal ulcer, renal alterations[1] - Bacterial endocarditis[5] - During and immediately after neurosurgery[5] ## Adverse Reactions Common adverse effects include: - Hemorrhages[1] - Allergic reactions[1] - Vasospastic reactions[1] ## Special Considerations - Caution is advised in elderly patients, during pregnancy, and in patients with renal insufficiency[1] - The medication is compatible with breastfeeding[1][3] - In case of overdose, intravenous administration of protamine sulfate is recommended[1] Heparina cálcica is obtained from porcine intestinal mucosa and produces a lower incidence of local hematomas compared to other forms of heparin[5].
