Overview

Heparinoid topical cream, specifically containing mucopolysaccharide polysulfate (MPS), is a semi-synthetic small molecule preparation derived from mammalian cartilage. It possesses anti-coagulant, fibrinolytic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of enzymes such as hyaluronidase, which helps reduce tissue swelling, and the promotion of fibrinolysis to accelerate the breakdown of blood clots and bruises. This specific formulation was evaluated by Necmettin Erbakan University in a randomized controlled trial (NCT04119297) to determine its efficacy in treating periorbital edema and ecchymosis in patients following anterior craniotomy. The study found that the heparinoid cream did not significantly reduce these postoperative complications compared to cold application or routine care.
