HepaStem is an allogeneic cell therapy composed of human heterologous liver progenitor cells (HHALPC), which are derived from healthy donated human livers. Developed by Promethera Biosciences (and subsequently Cellaïon), the therapy is designed to treat severe liver diseases including acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and urea cycle disorders (UCD). HepaStem works through a multi-modal mechanism of action, primarily exerting anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects to reduce liver inflammation and promote tissue regeneration. It is administered via intravenous infusion and has been granted Orphan Drug Designation in the US and Europe for certain indications.
