Hepatalin-S is a synthetic version of the naturally occurring hormone hepatalin, which is secreted by the liver in response to insulin pulses after a mixed nutrient meal. Unlike insulin, which primarily acts on the liver and adipose tissue to promote fat storage, hepatalin stimulates glucose uptake and glycogen storage specifically in skeletal muscle, heart, and kidney. It does not act on the liver, intestines, or adipocytes. The mechanism of action involves promoting postprandial glucose partitioning into muscle as glycogen rather than into fat stores. Hepatalin-S is being developed for use alone or in combination with insulin for long-term treatment of type 2 diabetes by restoring this physiological balance and improving glycemic control[2][4][5]. Reduced action of endogenous hepatalin leads to postprandial hyperglycemia and compensatory hyperinsulinemia with increased fat deposition; thus, restoring its function may help prevent or reverse prediabetes and type 2 diabetes[2][4].
