Overview

Hepatitis A inactivated virus vaccine is an injectable biologic used for active immunization against infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). The vaccine contains purified, formaldehyde-inactivated HAV grown in cell culture and adsorbed to aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant. It stimulates the immune system to produce anti-HAV antibodies and memory cells by activating B and T lymphocytes upon exposure to the viral antigen. This confers long-term protection against clinical disease caused by HAV. The primary indication is prevention of hepatitis A infection; it is recommended for both pre-exposure prophylaxis (routine immunization) and post-exposure prophylaxis. Major brands include HAVRIX (developed by GSK), VAQTA (developed by Merck), and AVAXIM (developed by Sanofi). The standard regimen consists of two doses administered at least 6 months apart[1][3][5][6][8].
