Hepatitis A vaccines are biologics used to provide active immunity against the hepatitis A virus (HAV). Most commercially available formulations are inactivated virus vaccines, although live-attenuated versions are used in certain regions. The vaccine is typically produced by growing the virus in human cell culture (such as MRC-5 cells), followed by purification and inactivation with formaldehyde. It is often adsorbed onto an aluminum-based adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity. The vaccine works by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against HAV, providing long-term protection against hepatitis A infection. It is recommended for routine pediatric immunization, travelers to endemic areas, and individuals at increased risk of infection.
