The Hepatitis B Booster Vaccine is an oral vaccine candidate developed by the Applied Biotechnology Institute using a plant-based expression platform. The vaccine consists of the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) expressed in transgenic maize (corn). This approach utilizes the natural bioencapsulation provided by plant cells to protect the antigen from gastric degradation, facilitating delivery to the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) to stimulate a mucosal and systemic immune response. Designed as a heat-stable and cost-effective alternative to traditional injectable vaccines, it is intended for both the prevention and treatment of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and is currently in preclinical development.
