Overview
Hepatitis B immune globulin is a human-derived immunoglobulin G (IgG) preparation containing high titers of antibodies against the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). It is used for post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent the development of hepatitis B infection in individuals recently exposed to the virus—such as newborns of infected mothers, sexual partners of infected individuals, healthcare workers after needle-stick injuries, and liver transplant recipients at risk for reinfection. The drug provides passive immunity by supplying anti-HBs antibodies that neutralize circulating virus and prevent its entry into hepatocytes. It does not provide long-term protection; vaccination with a hepatitis B vaccine is required for lasting immunity[1][2][3][4][5].
