Overview

Hepatitis B surface antigen (recombinant DNA) is a protein subunit vaccine consisting of the viral envelope protein of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). Produced using recombinant DNA technology, typically in yeast (*Saccharomyces cerevisiae*), it is the primary component of standard prophylactic HBV vaccines such as Engerix-B and Recombivax HB. Beyond its established role in preventing HBV infection, this antigen has been investigated by the Klinikum der Universitaet Muenchen AöR (University of Munich) as a therapeutic vaccine candidate for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B. In a therapeutic context, the antigen is intended to overcome immune tolerance in chronically infected patients, stimulating the production of anti-HBs antibodies and activating T-cell mediated responses to reduce viral load and achieve functional cure. These applications often involve specialized adjuvants or heterologous prime-boost strategies to enhance immunogenicity.
