Overview

Hepatitis B surface antigen vaccine is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine designed to provide active immunity against infection caused by all known subtypes of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The vaccine consists of the viral envelope protein, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), which is produced using recombinant DNA technology, typically expressed in *Saccharomyces cerevisiae* (baker's yeast). Upon intramuscular administration, the HBsAg particles stimulate the host's immune system to produce neutralizing anti-HBs antibodies. These antibodies provide protection by binding to the virus and preventing its entry into hepatocytes. Most formulations are adsorbed onto an aluminum-based adjuvant to enhance the immunogenic response, though newer versions may utilize alternative adjuvants like TLR9 agonists. It is indicated for individuals of all ages, including neonates, to prevent HBV-related liver diseases such as chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
