Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Engerix-B is a non-infectious recombinant DNA vaccine used to induce active immunity against infection caused by all known subtypes of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The vaccine contains purified hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), which is produced by genetically engineered yeast cells (*Saccharomyces cerevisiae*) carrying the gene that codes for the surface antigen of HBV. Upon administration, the HBsAg protein stimulates the immune system to produce specific humoral antibodies (anti-HBs), which provide protection against the virus. Engerix-B is indicated for individuals of all ages, including infants, children, and adults. It is particularly utilized in high-risk populations such as healthcare workers, patients with chronic kidney disease (including those on hemodialysis), and patients with diabetes mellitus, who may exhibit diminished immune responses to standard vaccination protocols.
