Hepatitis B vaccine (recombinant) (modified process) is a non-infectious subunit viral vaccine designed to prevent infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is produced using recombinant DNA technology, where the gene encoding the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is inserted into yeast cells, typically *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*. These genetically engineered yeast cells then produce HBsAg, which is harvested and purified. When administered, this HBsAg stimulates the body's immune system to produce specific antibodies against HBV, thereby conferring active immunity and protecting against HBV infection, which can lead to severe liver diseases such as chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. The "modified process" refers to manufacturing advancements aimed at reducing variability and optimizing the immunogenicity of the vaccine.
