Overview

This entry refers to the combination of a hepatitis B vaccine and entecavir. The hepatitis B vaccine is a biologic preparation that induces active immunity against the hepatitis B virus (HBV) by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against HBV surface antigens. It is primarily used for prevention of HBV infection. Entecavir is an oral antiviral small molecule, specifically a guanosine nucleoside analogue, indicated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B infection in adults and children 2 years and older with evidence of active viral replication or liver damage. Entecavir works by inhibiting all three functional activities of the HBV polymerase (reverse transcriptase): base priming, reverse transcription from pregenomic RNA, and synthesis of positive-strand HBV DNA. This results in decreased viral replication[1][2][3][7]. The combination may be considered in clinical scenarios where both prophylaxis (vaccine) and antiviral suppression (entecavir) are needed.
