Overview

Hepatitis B virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes is an autologous adoptive cell therapy developed by Chongqing Three Gorges Central Hospital for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B. The therapy involves the ex vivo expansion and activation of a patient's own T cells using specific HBV antigens, such as HBsAg, HBcAg, and HBeAg. These sensitized cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) are then re-infused into the patient, where they are designed to recognize and lyse HBV-infected hepatocytes that present viral peptides on their surface via MHC class I molecules. This approach aims to overcome the T-cell exhaustion and immune tolerance typically observed in chronic HBV infection, thereby reducing viral load and potentially achieving a functional cure.
