Overview

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), also known as scatter factor, is a pleiotropic cytokine and the endogenous ligand for the MET receptor tyrosine kinase (c-Met). Binding of HGF to MET triggers receptor dimerization and activation of downstream signaling pathways, including PI3K/AKT, MAPK/ERK, and STAT3, which regulate essential cellular processes such as proliferation, survival, motility, and angiogenesis. In clinical development, HGF is being investigated in multiple modalities: as a recombinant protein for pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary arterial hypertension (e.g., by Kringle Pharma), as a plasmid-based gene therapy for peripheral arterial disease (e.g., by the Institute of Radiation and Radiation Medicine), and as a component of non-blood product regimens for hemophilia (e.g., by the Shaanxi Yida Hemophilia Institute). Its therapeutic potential is derived from its potent regenerative, pro-angiogenic, and anti-fibrotic properties.
