Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hepbest is a branded generic version of tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) and a prodrug of tenofovir. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults with compensated liver disease and is also utilized in the management of HIV-1 infection. As a prodrug, TAF is converted intracellularly to the active metabolite tenofovir diphosphate, which inhibits viral replication by competing with natural substrates for incorporation into viral DNA, leading to chain termination. Compared to the older formulation tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), TAF provides higher intracellular concentrations of the active drug with lower systemic exposure, thereby reducing the risk of bone and renal toxicities. Hepbest is manufactured by Mylan Pharmaceuticals and distributed by companies such as Magicine Pharma.
