Drug intelligence / Profile preview
HEPP (DL-3-hydroxy-3-ethyl-3-phenylpropionamide) is a small molecule anticonvulsant drug developed by the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) and the Instituto Nacional de Neurología y Neurocirugía (INNN) in Mexico. It has been investigated for the treatment of epilepsy, particularly refractory epilepsy, and status epilepticus. HEPP acts as a modulator of the GABAergic system, interacting with GABAA and GABAB receptors, and also inhibits voltage-gated sodium channels such as Nav1.2. In addition to its anticonvulsant properties, HEPP exhibits immunomodulatory and neuroprotective effects, including the attenuation of microglial activation and the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-alpha, IL-6, and IL-4) in the brain.
