Overview

HER-2 chimeric immune receptor T cells (also known as HER2 CAR-T cells) are an adoptive cellular immunotherapy consisting of T lymphocytes genetically engineered to express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) targeting the Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2/neu). These cells are designed to recognize and eliminate HER2-expressing tumor cells in a non-MHC-restricted manner. Early research, such as that conducted at the University of Pennsylvania, demonstrated that HER2 is widely expressed in ovarian cancer and that these engineered T cells can effectively target and kill primary tumor cells derived from patients, providing a rationale for clinical development in advanced ovarian carcinoma.
