Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hericium erinaceus extract, commonly known as Lion's Mane mushroom extract, is a botanical substance derived from the fruiting bodies or mycelia of the *Hericium erinaceus* fungus. It is widely utilized in traditional medicine and as a dietary supplement for its purported nootropic and neuroprotective effects. The extract contains two primary classes of bioactive compounds: hericenones (found in the fruiting body) and erinacines (found in the mycelium), both of which are capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier. These compounds are thought to stimulate the synthesis of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), thereby promoting hippocampal neurogenesis and supporting the survival of cholinergic neurons. Clinical investigations have focused on its potential therapeutic utility in treating mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, depression, and anxiety disorders.
