Overview

Hericium erinaceus mycelium is the underground vegetative state of the lion’s mane mushroom, notable for its high content of cyathin diterpenoids known as erinacines, which are absent from the fruiting body. The mycelium and its derived extracts are being investigated for dietary supplement use, particularly for their neuroprotective, neuroregenerative, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects. Erinacines in mycelium stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis, cross the blood–brain barrier, and have shown preclinical benefits in models of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Additional activities include inhibition of NF-κB signaling, downregulation of inflammatory cytokine production, upregulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines, inhibition of COX-2 and iNOS, antimicrobial activity (including against resistant bacteria), as well as possible cardiovascular and metabolic effects in animal studies[1][3][2].
