Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Shingrix (herpes zoster vaccine (recombinant, adjuvanted)) is a non-live, recombinant subunit vaccine developed by GSK for the prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) and post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). The vaccine consists of a purified recombinant varicella-zoster virus (VZV) glycoprotein E (gE) antigen combined with the proprietary AS01B adjuvant system. The AS01B adjuvant system contains QS-21 (a purified plant saponin extract from *Quillaja saponaria*) and 3-O-desacyl-4'-monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL), which work synergistically to activate innate immune pathways and enhance antigen presentation. This formulation is designed to elicit a robust, long-lasting antigen-specific cellular and humoral immune response, helping to overcome the natural age-related decline in immunity. It is administered intramuscularly as a two-dose series.
