Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Herring roe oil is a lipid extract from the roe of the North Atlantic spring-spawning herring (Clupea harengus). It is a rich source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in a natural ratio of approximately 3:1. [6] A significant portion of these fatty acids are bound to phospholipids, which is believed to improve their bioavailability and absorption compared to the triglyceride form found in conventional fish oils. [3, 17] The oil also naturally contains the nutrient choline. [2, 3] Herring roe oil is being developed as an investigational medicinal product, HRO350, by Arctic Bioscience for the treatment of mild-to-moderate psoriasis. [1, 12] Clinical studies suggest it can improve psoriasis symptoms by modulating the immune system. [5, 6] Its primary mechanism of action is thought to be through providing the building blocks for the body to produce Specialized Pro-resolving Mediators (SPMs), such as resolvins, protectins, and maresins. [7, 11, 12] These lipid mediators play a key role in the active resolution of inflammation. [15] In addition to its pharmaceutical development, herring roe oil is marketed globally as a nutraceutical and dietary supplement under various brand names, such as Romega, for general health benefits related to the brain, heart, and vision.
