Overview

hESC-derived midbrain dopaminergic neurons are an investigational cell therapy for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. This regenerative medicine approach involves the large-scale differentiation of clinical-grade human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) into high-purity midbrain dopaminergic (mDA) progenitor cells under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions. The cells are surgically transplanted into the putamen or striatum, where they are intended to mature into functional dopaminergic neurons, integrate into the host brain, and restore dopaminergic innervation. By replacing the neurons lost in the substantia nigra, the therapy aims to provide sustained symptomatic relief and potentially modify the disease course. Key clinical programs include S. Biomedics' TED-A9 and the GForce-PD consortium's STEM-PD.
