Hetacillin is a semisynthetic beta-lactam antibiotic of the aminopenicillin family. It is a prodrug that itself has no antibacterial activity but is rapidly converted in the body to ampicillin, which exerts bactericidal effects by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Hetacillin was used for treating bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, primarily gram-positive bacteria. It was available for both human and veterinary use under various brand names but has been withdrawn from the market for human use due to lack of therapeutic advantage over ampicillin[1][3][5][6].
