Overview

Heterotheca inuloides flower, commonly known as Mexican Arnica, is derived from a flowering plant native to Mexico, belonging to the Asteraceae family. Traditionally, it has been widely utilized in Mexican folk medicine for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antiseptic properties, addressing conditions such as rheumatism, muscular pain, bruises, sprains, and skin inflammations. It has also been explored for gastrointestinal disorders, dental issues, and in preliminary studies for cytotoxic, antioxidant, and antiparasitic activities. The plant's therapeutic effects are attributed to a rich array of phytochemicals, including cadinane sesquiterpenes (e.g., 7-hydroxy-3,4-dihydrocadalene, 7-hydroxycalamenene) and flavonoids (e.g., quercetin, kaempferol, luteolin, apigenin). While primarily used topically in ointments and lotions, it has also been consumed internally as teas or tinctures, though internal use is generally cautioned against due to potential toxicity.
