Heweitongxie (also known as He-Wei-Tong-Xie or HWXT) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formulation derived from the classical Large Chengqi Decoction. It is composed of multiple herbal ingredients including Codonopsis pilosula (C. pilosula), Poria cocos (P. cocos), Atractylodes macrocephala (A. macrocephala), Citrus reticulata (C. reticulata), Pinellia ternate (P. ternate), and others[2]. The formulation has been studied for its therapeutic effects in acute pancreatitis complicated with gastrointestinal dysfunction and has also been investigated for use in functional constipation in elderly patients with "spleen and stomach weakness" according to TCM theory[1][3]. In clinical studies, administration of HWTX was associated with significant improvement in gastrointestinal symptoms such as stomach ache, abdominal distension, borborygmus, and defecation compared to standard care alone[1].
